IMCL develops legal education project
Often international students do not even know they are protected under Australia law.
At IMCL, we want to make sure that international students living in Victoria know their rights under Australian law so they have a safe and happy experience studying in Victoria.
In 2017, as part of the Victorian Labor Government's International Student Welfare Program initiative, IMCL was awarded a grant to develop an online legal education program specifically to help international students understand their rights and know where to seek legal help in their key moments of need.
These needs may include tenancy disputes, dealing with police and people in authority, infringements, and personal safety. The program will provide legal support for international students studying at universities, TAFEs and private education providers.
IMCL CEO Dan Stubbs recently spoke with SBS News about the new legal education project.
“Often these students aren't even aware that they have rights under Australian law, and they can be protected under Australian law and they can take action," Dan told SBS.
The Victorian Minister for Trade and Investment Philip Dalidakis said the program was a great way for international students studying in Victoria to be supported and be better welcomed in the local community.
“By ensuring our international students have the best possible experience, we’re creating ambassadors who will promote Victoria’s welcoming community, cultural diversity and strong economy.”
