About Us

Formerly the North Melbourne Legal Service, we have been providing free legal advice and assistance to our community since 1978. We changed our name to Inner Melbourne Community Legal (IMCL) in 2013 to better reflect the community we serve.

In 2022, IMCL merged with Flemington and Kensington Community Legal Centre (FKCLC). FKCLC began in 1980 as a volunteer service based at the Flemington Community Health Centre before it gained funding to provide free legal advice and assistance to the local area. The merger means IMCL now runs the Police Accountability Project, which has addressed police misconduct and human rights abuses for more than thirty years.

IMCL has a small but dedicated team of staff who are generously supported by volunteer solicitors, barristers and law students. We work with and maintain close links with a wide range of local community groups, organisations, and associations.

We are supported by funding from state and federal government as well as pro bono assistance and support from our corporate partners. We are a member of the Federation of Community Legal Centres and the National Association of Community Legal Centres.
